“There was a time when my wife and I went to Quincy Jones’s home to pick up some music for an assignment he had given me. While there, he glowingly discussed with Marge a book that he was interested in producing into a movie, and gave her a signed copy. Two years later he invited us down to the studio to watch Steven Spielberg direct a scene for which I later wrote the music. The name of the book and the movie was ‘The Color Purple’.”
